While storing a digital copy of your Will can be a good backup, it's crucial to understand that a digital copy alone is not legally valid in Singapore. For a Will to be legally recognised, it must be a printed or handwritten paper document, signed in person at the foot of the Will.
You can store a digital copy of your will as a backup, but it's not a substitute for the original. The original signed Will is what the courts will require for a Grant of Probate.
You can also store information about where your original Will is located at My Legacy's Vault or with the Singapore Academy of Law's (SAL) Wills Registry.
In the event that the original Will is lost or destroyed, any other copy (including a digital copy) may be subject to court approval and must be supported with evidence of its validity. This process is outlined in Family Justice Rules Section 248 and requires proof of the will's existence and content.
