Guardianship entails a legal responsibility to care for the child until the age of 21 years old. It encompasses matters relating to the child’s custody, upbringing, and the management of any property that belongs to the child or is held in trust for the child.
Under section 5 of the Guardianship of Infants Act (GIA), a parent or guardian may apply to the court for orders concerning custody, access rights, and the payment of maintenance for the child in the exercise of their duties.
